Homeopathy can work for headache and migraine

Migraine can be caused by “painkillers” while homeopathy can work!

Thierry Clerc practices in Cambridge (UK) as a clinical homeopath and a nutritionist. He is a regular contributor of several national and international health magazines.

As reported by the BBC in September 2012, the health authorities has started to ring the alarm bell on the abuse and over-use of painkillers. It is estimated than in the UK alone, one million people suffer from headaches caused by painkillers. In parallel, another medical study has found that homeopathic can be a safe and effective alternative for headaches and migraines. We hope, you enjoy this newsletter.

Why taking painkillers in not the best long-term strategy for pain

Taking painkillers to temporarily reduce discomfort is sometimes necessary. However, this should only be used in the last resort and as part of a strategy to try and eliminate the pain in a natural way, in accordance with how the body works. Fully eliminating pain can take time. However, this is the only viable way. The alternative is to increase the strength and intake of painkillers until the highest level possible is reached. And then, there is very little that conventional medicine can offer.

The issue is that all these medical have serious side-effects and they are just “hiding the pain”, letting the body degenerate while switching off the nerve signals that carry the pain. Painkillers kill about 8,000 people a year in the US, and Paracetamol alone is the foremost cause of acute liver failure in the Western world and liver failure death in the UK.

Enter the latest study in homeopathy for headache and migraine

Researchers from the French pharmaceutical company, Boiron, have studied the use of homeopathic medicines in children with migraine. The research, published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, was an observational, prospective, open, non-randomized, non-comparative undertaken in 12 different countries. The researchers looked at results from homeopathic prescribing by 59 medical doctors who were treating children and young adults with migraine.

As always in homeopathy, the treatment was each time made of individualised homeopathic remedies. The results showed that the frequency, severity, and duration of migraine attacks decreased significantly during the 3-month follow-up period and children spent significantly less time off school during follow-up than before inclusion.

Why can homeopathic treatment take time before healing is achieved?

Proper healing takes time. Most migraines and headaches are classified as nervous disorders, and often the nervous system will need to be re-nourished and re-generated until the response to homeopathy is truly effective. This is partly because most people live a stressful life and have a diet that actually has a negative effect on their nervous system.

For example, many sufferers from chronic migraines have been found to have low levels of magnesium or to not drink enough water for their needs. While, supplementations or changing diet will not be enough, these additional support can increase the speed of recovery and the efficacy of the holistic treatment.

Another example is the use of anti-depressants for headaches, such as amitriptyline. Usually, a change in diet that will help to increase the right levels of proteins will also speed recovery. This is because most neurotransmitters are derived from proteins.
